Species diversity and distribution of Ostracoda (Crustacea) in Sungai Kubang Badak, Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia

Abstract


This study was carried out to determine the ostracod fauna of Sungai Kubang Badak and its estuary, Langkawi, Kedah, Malaysia and investigate their distribution from 25 sampling stations. The ostracods assemblages comprised a total of 842 specimens from 16 genera and 27 species. The ostracod abundance ranges from 4 to 182 specimens and the most abundant species were Hemicytheridea wangi (13.03% of total specimens) and Neomonoceratina delicata (10.71% of total specimens). The species diversity in the study area ranges from 3 to 22 species. According to Shannon diversity index, it was found that Sungai Kubang Badak had a mean diversity value of H = 1.6. Cluster analysis of the ostracod assemblages defined three faunal biofacies, biofacies 1 is dominated by H. wangi, N. delicata and Stigmatocythere indica, is present at the station with the highest density and diversity amongst the other stations which located at lower estuary and nearshore area. Biofacies 2 is defined by the stations located at upper estuary with lowest value of density and diversity, dominated by H. wangi and Xestoleberis malaysiana. Biofacies 3 is characterized by the stations located at lower estuary, dominated by N. delicata and Hemicytheridea ornata. The ostracod assemblages indicated the transition from estuarine to open marine environments.
