Carbon estimation and economic value of Nypa fruticans (Thunb.) Wurmb. in Marudu Bay, Sabah, Malaysia

Abstract


Nypa fruticans is a mangrove palm species found naturally along coastlines in tropical forest of South-east Asia especially in brackish water. The mangrove forest ecosystem is believed to sequester a large amount of carbon. While standing carbon stocks of woody forest have been the focus of many studies, not many studies concentrated on palms especially N. fruticans. This  study was undertaken to develop an allometric model of N. fruticans to estimate total carbon stock including the total economic value for carbon in a Nypa forest at Marudu Bay mangrove forest, Sabah. Total carbon stocks was 1.43 tC/ha and the total economic value of carbon stocks in N. fruticans ranged from RM18.93/ha to RM3180.63/ha.
