Length-weight relationship and condition factor of Cobia, Rachycentron canadum (Rachycentridae) from the Northeastern Coastal Waters of Peninsular Malaysia

Abstract


The present study describes the length-weight relationships (LWR) and
condition factor of cobia, Rachycentron canadum from north-eastern coastal waters of Peninsular Malaysia during January 2014 to June 2015. A total of 94 specimens ranging from 38 cm to 154 cm (TL) and 0.3 kg to 21.0 kg (BW) were analyzed. The correlation coefficient b measured for the fish was 2.933±0.045. It was also found that the male R. canadum showed higher value of b compared to the female, 2.964±0.097 and 2.896±0.078, respectively. The calculated Fulton’s condition factor (K) values ranged from 0.51 to 0.82, with the mean value 0.63±0.036, indicating that Northeastern Coastal Water of Peninsular Malaysia provide a favourable environmental condition for this species. This study will enlighten biologists about the status and growth condition of this fish that live in this part of the region and will be very important from the fishery point of view.
